Brainless Bites

Aug 16, 2025

We chase dopamine, not truth, as algorithms feed us outrage. Pause, seek depth, and channel Cronkite’s clarity to cut through the tyranny of the brainless bites.

Our obsession with rapid-fire social media content has reshaped how we consume information. Platforms like TikTok and X deliver quick bursts of dopamine through 15-second videos, reducing complex policy debates to mere hashtags. We live in an era where nuance is sacrificed, and depth is sidelined. Gone are the days of Walter Cronkite’s measured half-hour news specials, which unpacked issues like Vietnam or civil rights with clarity and respect for the audience’s intelligence.

These fleeting soundbites are alluring—mental fast food. Research indicates that 72% of people prefer polished videos over text, with Gen Z averaging three hours daily on short-form content. Why wade through a dense policy brief when a 26-second video seems to capture the essence? Yet, data reveals our attention spans are dwindling, with users spending 80 minutes daily on TikTok alone. Algorithms serve up bite-sized outrage like candy, prioritizing engagement over insight.

The cost is steep. These clips are crafted for performance, not truth. A 2023 study found that 95% of a video’s message is retained compared to just 10% of text—but what lingers? Catchy slogans, not the intricacies of healthcare or trade policy. We’re left with emotions, not facts, and emotions alone cannot address complex challenges. In politics, phrases like “Build the wall” or “Defund the police” function as bumper stickers, rallying supporters while obscuring the complex realities of immigration or public safety. This spiral of simplicity silences nuanced voices under the weight of viral narratives.

Engagement is not understanding. While 84% of marketers champion short-form content for its reach, it often amplifies noise over substance. Cronkite’s 1968 Vietnam editorial didn’t merely report—it reshaped public discourse by delving into gritty realities, not catchy quips. Today’s social media-driven campaigns, heavy on buzz, often fade without lasting impact. Soundbites distract; they don’t build.

Breaking this cycle is challenging. Engaging with issues through in-depth reading or listening to experts requires effort. We stand for depth, not spoon-fed bites.  This is the only way to pierce the info fog. We are not doomed to snack on little bits of information which is incapable of conveying the fully complexity of the challenges we face. Nor are we incapable of slowing down, spending a little more time to study the details.

The next time a viral take beckons, pause. Seek out content that respects your intelligence and capacity to grapple with complexity. Depth endures, resonates, and transforms—not just our feeds, but our understanding.
